High Country Escape
If you’re looking for a true change of pace, this is it.
Hubbard Creek Outfitters is based near Paonia, Colorado, inside Gunnison National Forest on the Grand Mesa, the largest flat-top mountain in the world. With over 300 lakes spread across 500 square miles, this country offers room to roam. Moose, elk, deer, bear, coyotes, pine marten, and bald eagles are part of the landscape here. Stay in our cabin for a quiet getaway, or ride into the backcountry and camp where the roads end.
Guided Horseback Rides
In Western Colorado, horses are more than recreation. They’re how you travel the mountains.
We welcome experienced riders and first-timers alike. Our mountain-broke horses are sure-footed and know the trails through timber, meadows, and into remote non-motorized country. Day rides move through wildflower fields, across creeks, and up to high ridgelines with wide views stretching toward the San Juan Mountains to the south and Aspen and Snowmass to the north.
Remote Pack Trips
For those who want more than a trail ride, we offer overnight horseback camping trips.
We pack into roadless country where wildlife moves naturally and the nights are quiet. Wall tents, cots, and essential camp gear are provided. Evenings are spent around the fire, mornings start cool and clear, and days can include hiking, fishing nearby streams and ponds, or simply taking in the country. It’s a working mountain camp, not a campground experience.
More to Explore
The Grand Mesa area offers more than one way to spend a day.
Fishing, hiking, biking, ATV riding, wildlife watching, and quiet evenings by the fire all come naturally here. Local vineyards in the valley offer a different pace if you want to head into town before returning to camp. Whether you’re here for saddle time, solitude, or time outdoors with family and friends, this country gives you options.
Bring your riding spirit and a camera. We’ll handle the horses and the gear.
